Workshop Supervisor ( Neumann Contractors )

We are seeking an experienced and trade qualified supervisor who will plan, organise and direct workshop personnel.



Neumann Contractors has been operating for over 50 years and is a leading Australian owned Dredging Contractor. The company also operates Engineering & Fabrication, Equipment Manufacturing, Plant Management, Blast & Paint and Sand Extraction divisions.

Job tasks and responsibilities

  • Uphold Company's workplace Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Implement and perform preventative maintenance strategies.
  • Monitor and carry out all plant and equipment service scheduling.
  • Carry out repairs and maintenance on a priority basis, and lead by example.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems effectively and organise repairs in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensure that all work carried out meets the relevant engineering standards.
  • Interpret company policies to workers and enforce safety regulations.
  • Interpret job orders to workers, and assign duties.
  • Inspect and list machinery repairs and co-ordinate works program accordingly.
  • Perform works programs to budget and time frames.
  • Recommend measures to improve equipment performance and quality.
  • Organise all vehicle fleet maintenance requirements and fit out of new vehicles.
  • Ensure all Company vehicles comply with safety and roadworthy guidelines.
  • Continually develop and train apprentices to a high standard.
  • Perform activities of workers supervised.
  • Work additional hours required to fulfil duties.
  • Ensure all direct report employees' weekly timesheets are submitted on time, correctly costed and in line with the current EBA.
  • Monitor direct reports' performance, submit written training needs, analyse progress.
  • Conduct toolbox meetings, on a regular basis (minimum weekly).
  • Ensure workshop and plant yard housekeeping is kept clean and tidy.
  • Ensure workshop & yard are secured at the end of each day and weekends.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Skills and experience

  • Trade qualifications – Diesel Fitting with slurry pump, hydraulic, fabrication, marine and electrical expertise
  • Minimum of 10 years industry experience
  • Marine industry knowledge
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills
  • Sound computer literacy
  • Strong focus on all aspects of occupational health and safety
  • Strong ability to supervise staff, allocate resources and manage labour costs
  • Strong leadership skills, able to motivate, manage, train and encourage performance from the team.
  • Someone who takes pride and enjoyment from there vocation
  • Technically innovative
  • High level of detail, someone who controls and runs a repair workshop in a very controlled and organised structure
  • Maintains excellent workshop structure and housekeeping
  • Excellent record keeping and written ability
  • Problem solving and preventive maintenance abilities
  • Excellent overall knowledge of all types of machinery, Dredges, Barges, Slurry pumps, Engines, Loaders, excavators, winches, boats, 4×4 vehicles, trucks.
  • Strong understanding of all aspects of rigging and cranes
  • Tickets – car licence, forklift, crane, dogger or rigger, EWP, confined space
